Rival Sons/ Pabst Theatre// August.22.2019 – Concert Review

RIVAL SONS The Pabst Theatre / 8.22.2019

This has been my third time catching a @Rival Sons show and I can honestly say that I am still trying to figure out what magic the band conjures as a part of their intensely powerful shows. All I do know is that it leaves the audience feeling like they have been cleansed, a baptism of sorts to all the baggage they carried as they walked into the show. Far-fetched ? Ask their fans.

It is undeniable how easy it is to get so caught up and spell-bound by the intricacies of Scott Holiday’s masterful bluesy rock slide and formidable crushing rock riffs that make a sweet girl blush.

Jay Buchanan is a whole other flavor. Spirited, raspy, vocals that shake the rafters and soulful delivery of every single word – there’s no doubt this man loves his craft and wants his music – the songs he pours himself into – to mean something to the audience receiving the message. It’s mesmerizing to watch him shifting and sliding around stage like a shaman channeling transcendental energies into this world.

The synergy between Holiday and Buchanan alone is enough of a lethal combination to bring a crowd to its knees.

I know by now you are probably thinking I’m laying on some thick hype here, but I am a believer in the rock and roll they serve up. It’s genuine and embraces all the facets of the rock and roll of old that some people believe is lost and gone forever – the kind that stirs your soul, opens your mind, and makes your heart ache- and gives it a modern edge.

And it’s not just one generation of listeners that are connecting with their music. As I looked out into the audience I saw people of all ages sharing a common connection.

The power of music is a beautiful thing with the right recipe.

Shooting stars across the sky
Splitting through the darkness
Putting a light into their eyes.’

#Undercover / Wolfgang – Pyramid Song (Radiohead)

October #UnderCover artist is Wolf Gang. (London) Alternative/Indie/Symphonic
Although on July 2015 the band posted their official end on their Facebook page, this haunting cover of Pyramid Song by Radiohead lives on.  Accompanied by the captivating video from the 1948 film “The Red Shoes”, it remains as one of the most brilliant covers I’ve ran across even though the recording is a little rough (a bedroom recording).
Max McElligott’s striking vocals and compelling piano liberties, as well as an ethereal choir take the song to another level of desperation and sadness.

Review : Greta Van Fleet// The Sylvee, Madison WI / 10.11.2018

I am a believer. A believer in the sense that I believe that Greta Van Fleet has the musicianship to become a very influential band in drawing a younger generation of people into a rock musical renaissance of sorts. Not that this was ever their intention. Maybe it’s more a serendipity of what they have created sonically that brings all ages out to their shows.  Greta Van Fleet is four young musicians – twin brothers Josh (vocals) and Jake (guitar), both 22, younger brother Sam (bass/keys, 19), and longtime family friend Danny Wagner (drums, 19).

Their hybrid sound definitely draws a definite parallel to the style of music that truly is the foundation and framework upon which some of the greatest rock, blues and soul musicians of the 60’s and 70’s built.  Names like Hendrix,  Johnny Lee Hooker, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, and many more.

For GVF, the recipe is perfect —  First the powerful songwriting and the passionate, sometimes fierce vocal delivery of Josh (whose range is something out of this world). Next add in Jake’s virtuosic guitar playing with commanding riffs and roaring distortion.  Balance that out with the rock steady rhythmic pace and moody synth tone created by Sam while topping it off with the tenacious, unyielding power of drummer Danny Wagner.

What is truly incredible is that with only being a professional band for just over a year or so, these guys have developed an undeniable sense of true showmanship in their performance, albeit playful, and you can see the confidence they exude in the interacting with each other and engaging their audience. They have charmed audiences (and big name artists alike), building a large fan base both here in the states and abroad.  Their message is one of bringing people together in peace, love and unity.

I look forward to release of their full length album, “Anthem of The Peaceful Army”. It will be available October 19 on Lava/Republic Records.

You can get it here : https://gretavanfleet.lnk.to/AOTPAFp

I am anxious to see how their live sound translates in the studio.  GVF will be continuing their current tour here in the states and overseas into the middle of 2019. You can follow everything GVF at http://www.gretavanfleet.com

Two of my few good pics of the man, the myth, the warrior.  The red light and fog proved extra tricky this night.

Truly blown away by the organic flow of this show. The interplay between man, instrument, and audience was electric.  No set list and jams that went on for days. Good things come to those who wait.

Are fans satisfied ? They heard a few new songs but are still chomping at the bit for a record release. Will it come ? In due time. For now, wolf fever is alive and well.

Still a few dates left to catch them on tour here :
