Rival Sons/ Pabst Theatre// August.22.2019 – Concert Review

RIVAL SONS The Pabst Theatre / 8.22.2019

This has been my third time catching a @Rival Sons show and I can honestly say that I am still trying to figure out what magic the band conjures as a part of their intensely powerful shows. All I do know is that it leaves the audience feeling like they have been cleansed, a baptism of sorts to all the baggage they carried as they walked into the show. Far-fetched ? Ask their fans.

It is undeniable how easy it is to get so caught up and spell-bound by the intricacies of Scott Holiday’s masterful bluesy rock slide and formidable crushing rock riffs that make a sweet girl blush.

Jay Buchanan is a whole other flavor. Spirited, raspy, vocals that shake the rafters and soulful delivery of every single word – there’s no doubt this man loves his craft and wants his music – the songs he pours himself into – to mean something to the audience receiving the message. It’s mesmerizing to watch him shifting and sliding around stage like a shaman channeling transcendental energies into this world.

The synergy between Holiday and Buchanan alone is enough of a lethal combination to bring a crowd to its knees.

I know by now you are probably thinking I’m laying on some thick hype here, but I am a believer in the rock and roll they serve up. It’s genuine and embraces all the facets of the rock and roll of old that some people believe is lost and gone forever – the kind that stirs your soul, opens your mind, and makes your heart ache- and gives it a modern edge.

And it’s not just one generation of listeners that are connecting with their music. As I looked out into the audience I saw people of all ages sharing a common connection.

The power of music is a beautiful thing with the right recipe.

Michigan band, Great Van Fleet on tour, transcend time with throwback sound

Thrilled to announce that the October 11th  Greta Van Fleet show at The Sylvee, Madison, WI is sold out. Wisconsin knows great new music!
There has been a lot of talk about these four young men, three of them brothers,  and their throwback sound. With a majestic sound the likes of Led Zeppelin, and the swagger to match, they are a young band that is sincere in their hopes to make their own mark.

Currently the band two EP’s out and on are on the cusp of delivering their first full-length 10 song LP.  People around the industry are looking at this forthcoming release to see what they will build from here. Their talent is undeniable, as is their passion and intensity. Their live shows can be described as  giant walls of sound with savage guitar shreds, crushing drums and Josh’s dynamic howls and wails that shake you and draw you into a fervor. Much like lightening in a bottle, they have captured something elusive and powerful, and are now showing it off to the world.

To pay homage to all the guitarists I love and all their beautiful guitars I am starting a new post series of photographs called,  “A Man and His Guitar . ”

We all know that artists have a special relationship with their guitars and my goal is to capture some unique shots of the artist  that showcase their guitars. The first here is a picture of Britt Daniel of Spoon and Divine Fits with his Fender Telecaster Thinline .
