Review : Greta Van Fleet// The Sylvee, Madison WI / 10.11.2018

I am a believer. A believer in the sense that I believe that Greta Van Fleet has the musicianship to become a very influential band in drawing a younger generation of people into a rock musical renaissance of sorts. Not that this was ever their intention. Maybe it’s more a serendipity of what they have created sonically that brings all ages out to their shows.  Greta Van Fleet is four young musicians – twin brothers Josh (vocals) and Jake (guitar), both 22, younger brother Sam (bass/keys, 19), and longtime family friend Danny Wagner (drums, 19).

Their hybrid sound definitely draws a definite parallel to the style of music that truly is the foundation and framework upon which some of the greatest rock, blues and soul musicians of the 60’s and 70’s built.  Names like Hendrix,  Johnny Lee Hooker, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, and many more.

For GVF, the recipe is perfect —  First the powerful songwriting and the passionate, sometimes fierce vocal delivery of Josh (whose range is something out of this world). Next add in Jake’s virtuosic guitar playing with commanding riffs and roaring distortion.  Balance that out with the rock steady rhythmic pace and moody synth tone created by Sam while topping it off with the tenacious, unyielding power of drummer Danny Wagner.

What is truly incredible is that with only being a professional band for just over a year or so, these guys have developed an undeniable sense of true showmanship in their performance, albeit playful, and you can see the confidence they exude in the interacting with each other and engaging their audience. They have charmed audiences (and big name artists alike), building a large fan base both here in the states and abroad.  Their message is one of bringing people together in peace, love and unity.

I look forward to release of their full length album, “Anthem of The Peaceful Army”. It will be available October 19 on Lava/Republic Records.

You can get it here : https://gretavanfleet.lnk.to/AOTPAFp

I am anxious to see how their live sound translates in the studio.  GVF will be continuing their current tour here in the states and overseas into the middle of 2019. You can follow everything GVF at http://www.gretavanfleet.com

Two of my few good pics of the man, the myth, the warrior.  The red light and fog proved extra tricky this night.

Truly blown away by the organic flow of this show. The interplay between man, instrument, and audience was electric.  No set list and jams that went on for days. Good things come to those who wait.

Are fans satisfied ? They heard a few new songs but are still chomping at the bit for a record release. Will it come ? In due time. For now, wolf fever is alive and well.

Still a few dates left to catch them on tour here :

Michigan band, Great Van Fleet on tour, transcend time with throwback sound

Thrilled to announce that the October 11th  Greta Van Fleet show at The Sylvee, Madison, WI is sold out. Wisconsin knows great new music!
There has been a lot of talk about these four young men, three of them brothers,  and their throwback sound. With a majestic sound the likes of Led Zeppelin, and the swagger to match, they are a young band that is sincere in their hopes to make their own mark.

Currently the band two EP’s out and on are on the cusp of delivering their first full-length 10 song LP.  People around the industry are looking at this forthcoming release to see what they will build from here. Their talent is undeniable, as is their passion and intensity. Their live shows can be described as  giant walls of sound with savage guitar shreds, crushing drums and Josh’s dynamic howls and wails that shake you and draw you into a fervor. Much like lightening in a bottle, they have captured something elusive and powerful, and are now showing it off to the world.

“Reignwolf” surprise fans with 2018 Fall Tour in USA/Canada and new jams

It’s a great day for Reignwolf fans ! There is evidence of life.

The band posted on Facebook announcing fall US and Canada tour dates and hinted at music they have been putting together.  It was like a beacon to many of their hardcore fans who have stayed the course,  in hopes that they had not seen the last of Jordan Cook, the passionate force behind the wall of explosive guitar brilliance that is the stuff legends are made of – – – fire and fury.  (Check out the formidable singles ‘In the Dark’ and ‘Are You Satisfied’ to get a flavor of the distortion- laden blues this guy can lay down).

Reignwolf  have maintained a rather low profile conventionally, rolling across the country, gathering fans from their travels and live shows. That doesn’t mean they have not been on the music radar.  Their resume’ includes a prestigious spot opening for Black Sabbath on their Canadian tour, playing at Sasquatch, Lollapalooza , and Voodoo Festival to name a few.  All without a single proper album. In past interviews the band has discussed what they feel are the challenges of capturing the “essence” of their live music.

After releasing one track last year, ‘Hardcore’, fans looked to the release of a promised first full length album — then nothing.  If their short-list arsenal of singles gives a peek into what might be coming next, no doubt we are all in for an incredible churching in the school of Reignwolf.

Biffy Clyro

This is a tale of three Scotsmen, whose rise to success has been nothing short of what dreams are made of. Since the early age of 14, Simon Neil, James Johnston, and his brother, Ben have been making a racket, always with the hope of making music that people would enjoy, all the while with no grand illusions of rock stardom and worldwide acclaim. Yet, they have managed to do just that.

Holding tight to each other through thick and thin, the good times and bad, for the sheer love of making music, these gents have been not only able to eek out a good living doing what they love, they have crashed through the ceiling far beyond what their younger selves ever envisioned.

IMG_7987 c

One can easily follow the evolution of Biffy Clyro as a band through listening to the music catalog they have created. The tracks bear witness to the roads traveled and the men they have become. Time has not just solidified their brotherly bond, but it has also amassed a huge fan following they have enamored each step along the way. Their music’s vulnerable lyrics, dynamic “pomp, and circumstance” delivery works to break down the barriers of country and kingdom, uniting us reflecting on life, the human plight, and all it celebrates and despises. Biffy has become known for their amazing ability to create anthemic walls of sound and deliver a one-two punch — moving lyrics, and powerful riff-age. Their high stage energy is on a level that would stand up against many early legendary rockers.

Coming off some challenges with their bus, and missing the very first headlining show of their recent tour (Boston), the band enjoyed a pedaled back small in-studio performance at WIIL Rock in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. A few select winners enjoyed a live, in-studio acoustic show that can be viewed online at the station’s website. The band talked about working on many new songs and being excited about a writing a new album, hopefully in the next year. Their latest album, “Ellipsis,” is the seventh studio album which was released in July 2016. Featured tracks have been ‘Re-Arranged,’ ‘Medicine,’ ‘Animal Style,’ and ‘Wolves of Winter.’

Biffy’s return to Austin’s was met with much excitement, with many people I spoke had come tonight upon hearing the band play at Austin’s previously. I also encountered several ‘lifer’ fans who have been into their music for a long time, travelling long distances to get an opportunity to see the band here in the US on this tour.

IMG_0195

The audience was an eclectic mix, speaking much to the way the band’s music is able to connect with people of all ages and walks of life. Their performance was lively, fun, and intense. Biffy didn’t hold back at all in making this venue a hot sweaty mess of believers. The band appeared to be having a great night as well, shifting from coveted classic tracks to songs from their latest album, chatting with the audience, and being playful on stage.

IMG_20170911_224432781 x

The sound was well balanced, which really showed in their softer acoustic songs like ‘Medicine” and ‘Folding Stars”. Simon’s guitar sounded amazing against his delicate, heartfelt vocals. The complex walls of sound these guys can create are unbelievable. Overall — killer show!

Can’t wait to see them again and look forward to the next chapter to their story.
